Trick or Treat!

October 28, 2008

This is our first Halloween in Halifax, so I am not in the know of the hot spots for trick or treating. However I am not sure how I feel about heading out side your own neighborhood to go trick or treating.

When we were children, you headed out your front door. You went to the people you knew in and around your neighborhood. It was safe, fun and Susie Dad always teased or Heather Mom was sure to give you extra with a wink. You knew that the elderly couple on the corner gave out full size chocolate bars and that the young couple three doors down were never home. That is the type of experience I would like for our children.

In an age where people are more isolated, people work, people commute and do not even know their neighbors, this is a perfect opportunity to get out there and introduce yourself and your children.

We have ventured outside our neighborhood once. We had just moved to California and knew our area was a little sketchy so we headed to a nicer block. Somehow I felt like we were cheating, being unfair. I have heard of busloads of children being dropped off in the "it" area. That seems a little greedy. What would we be teaching our children by taking them away form their home to a swanky area? That their neighborhood is not up to snuff?

This year our family is heading to our new neighborhood. We are moving into our first house December 1, so we thought it poetic to head over and meet the neighbors and get to know the area just that much better.

Where will you be taking the kids out trick or treating?
