Halloween ... Spoiled?

October 30, 2008

Halloween is so exciting for preschoolers. The legend of mounds and mounds of candy, the magic, the costumes, oh and did I mention the candy?

Our household is essentially candy free. Although not militant about it, I feel that in their lifetime there will be endless opportunities to have treats, therefore sweets are not necessary on a daily basis. We do not introduce juice until the kids are at least two and then I found it impossible to deny for it was offered everywhere. At home we still dilute our four year old's juice! I know we are not the norm, but it seems to work for our family. Obviously there are exceptions to these rules and Halloween is one of them. Every year I wonder how long we will be able to have absolute control, filter and smuggle out the candy to Daddy's office.

This year, my sweet fairy is sick. She has a terrible cold, sore throat and is beside herself with worry. Will she miss Halloween? We have reassured her that no matter what she will receive some candy on Halloween, however that is not much comfort to a sick, yet excited kid. Her younger brother is just now coming down with the same cold and is beside himself with yucky feelings. There are so many things I cannot control for my children, no matter how hard I try. I am unable to mend them completely when they are sick. I have to be content to comfort them, snuggle them and lie beside them till the illness has passed. I cannot reschedule Halloween, so my sick daughter does not miss out. My secret will soon be discovered.

Mommy is not all powerful, ruler of the universe.

Shocking for me as well as the children.

We still have 24 hours to kick this cold, feel free and energetic, ready to Trick or Treat till our pumpkin buckets are bursting.

Have you or your children ever missed Halloween?
