Childhood Favourites

November 10, 2008

Have you ever noticed that great children's stories have a rhythm that makes them fun to read aloud and listen to? Daily I read a loud an average of 10-15 books. It sounds like a lot and there are those days the pile of books to be read seems endless. Yet even though the stories are short, they are fun to dive into and get lost in. The books we read to our preschoolers inspire their play, boost their already curious nature and can make them giggle, frown orsimply smile.

The time we take to read with our children is priceless. You cannot multitask or be distracted while reading. You cannot talk on the phone or check your email real quick, you have to be present, in the moment. That time will be unforgettable to your child. Of course your preschooler will not remember each and every story you read to them, no matter how many silly voices you use. However, they will remember those special stories that make their heart flutter and their minds race with possibilities.

Both my husband and I have personal favourites from our childhood. Books and stories that we remember and cherish. We were fortunate that his mother saved some of those books so we can share them with our children. Two of his favourites that have become our favourites are
Little Bunny Follows His Nose by Katherine Howard and Professor Wormbog's Gloomy Kerploppus: A Book of Great Smells By Mercer Mayer. Our children have read through these books over and over. I personally had a huge love for Dr Seuss books. The first book I remember reading all by myself was Go Dog Go by PD Eastman. A classic that I have shared with my children.

What are your favourite children's book from your childhood?

I loved Ant and Bee and the Doctor. James has my copy. I just looked on Amazon and the cheapest copy there is selling for $120. Maybe I'll take it away :-). Nobody ever buys a children's book for that, do they? Coincidentally, the Dr. is named Dr. J.
