Literary Travel with Children

November 13, 2008

I disappeared this week. My husband was heading out to give a talk in Prince Edward Island and at the last minute we decided to make it a family trip. Usually traveling with children includes much planning, packing and preparation. Instead we winged it this time and we had a blast! I have always wanted to visit Prince Edward Island.

As a child I was absolutely engrossed with the Anne of Green Gables series by L.M. Montgomery. Not only did I read the entire series, I would look forward to the CBC made for television miniseries every year. I was only seven years old when the mini series first aired. I had already read through the eight books, and was completely absorbed into that as well.

I am not alone in my love for the books. Since publication, Anne of Green Gables has sold over 50 million books, more books than Gone with the Wind, To Kill a Mockingbird, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (reference Wikipedia). I completely related to Anne, growing up without parents, being shuffled from home to home, never being wanted for long. Yet that fiery little red head, overcame all that. Anne is creative, cunning and through sheer will succeeded in accomplishing her dreams.

Prince Edward Island is absolutely as beautiful and wondrous as her reputation would suggest. We drove over the Confederation bridge, which is 12.9 kilometre (8 mile) long. Our preschooler was in awe at the fact we were driving over the ocean! At the end we were greeted with a fabulous rainbow! While we were there we toured theFounders museum, Prince Edward Island is the birth place of Confederation in 1867 (making Canada a country). The museum was a little entailed for a preschooler, however she still enjoyed walking through time and experiencing it.

I would have loved to gone to visit the Green Gables site in Prince Edward Island National Park in Cavendish, unfortunately we simply did not have time. I did however visit the Anne of Green Gable Store and purchased the book set to share with my children. We willdefinitely we planning a family vacation in the future to Prince Edward Island.

Have you ever gone to the place of a literary classic?

That is so cool. Jealous. It's some place I think, somehow, I won't make it to, but you never know the twists and turns life hands you. I've been to Monterey Bay on a quest to follow Steinbeck. We (a friend I went with) peered into Doc's lab (closed to the public) and went to the Steinbeck Museum. Someday, I would like to go to the U.k. and do Beatrix Potter, A.A. Milne, and King Arthur in one fell swoop. When James is somewhat older, but not too old, so he still appreciates Pooh and Peter.

Sounds like a great trip down "memory" lane, despite not seeing the house where Anne "lived". I was also a huge fan. I didn't know about the amount of books were sold, compared with the others you mentioned. That is amazing!
