Tis the Season

December 01, 2008

In Canada, December is a dark, cold month bringing snow to most parts. The days are short and the darkness seems endless. The brightness of the season is a welcoming warmth and full of celebration. The sights and sounds of the season are very exciting to preschoolers. Last year was our first year with an over-excited child beside themselves and not quite themselves. Preschoolers can easily lose themselves in the excitement, the anticipation and celebration.

In order to help our preschooler through the season, we celebrate Advent making our way through the month, slowly and relatively peacefully. Yesterday was the official first day of Advent. In Sunday school our preschooler made a candle for the Advent wreath and we have shared what we believe the meaning of Christmas is and how Advent is the way in which we as a family prepares for the celebration of Jesus' birth. My hope is as we share in the joy and love our family has we can ease the over stimulation that is bound to distract her.

Every family has their own traditions and beliefs during this holiday season. I am determined to keep the magic and love in Christmas, while keeping out the stress and commercialism. This year is chaotic for us as a family. We purchased our first home and are moving in this week. While unpacking boxes, cleaning and looking out for the kids we will be trying to prepare for the celebrations of the season as well. Yet I have peace in my heart. Our family is together, in a beautiful city, settled and looking forward to celebrating.

How do you keep the spirit of season true for your family?
