Record Keeping

January 15, 2009

Our children's lives pass before us so quickly. When our first was a newborn, premature, so tiny and I was so needed, I felt like time stood still. I wanted to reach that next milestone, that next pound gained, I wanted her to grow. Now that she is four and a half, I want time to stop, I want her to remain unchanging, I want to capture these days, hold them forever.

Although I cannot stop time, I can capture it. I take a lot of pictures. Yet I find when life gets busy, as it always does, I take less, capture less. I keep promising myself that I will capture more memories on video, yet I find I am more living the moment than capturing it. I was better at it when there was one child to capture, now that we have two, going on three children time refusing to stand still.

When the children were babies I recorded their first year in their baby books. Ok, confession time. My youngest has a baby book that desperately wants to be filled! It is on my to do list, actually quite a priority. Thankfully for the last five years I have maintained a blog that has my children's lives archived. That truly has become my source of recording our lives as we traveled to the US and back. Now that we are more settled I record our daily lives, hoping to capture the moments that slip so quickly from me.

I just came across an amazing idea through a good friend. It is called The Blue Yonder Book of Days, created by Blue Yonder. For a very nominial fee you can download each month from the Blue Yonder Etsy shop. Here is a quote from their blog:

Essentially, it is a monthly journal of mindful experiences, natural pursuits, yummy recipes, science experiments and time spent soaking in life's goodness. It's meant for any family that wants to spend time together, not just homeschoolers. Each edition comes with at least 12 illustrated pages to download, print and put in your own binder (you can make one for each child, or just make one big family book).

I absolutely adore the idea of setting up a binder, to record our activities and days. Wouldn't it be an amazing journey years later to reflect and share with our grown children? I haven't purchased the month of January yet, and it is slipping by me. I hope to take care of it this weekend. I will share with you how it worked!

How do you capture time and memories with your children?

I also am "guilty" of living in the moment, rather than getting out that camera yet once again. After three kids, it becomes daunting. Scrapbook? Nope, I ain't got one. I like your idea though. If I ever do one, I like the printout idea to add to a binder. Thanks for the inspiration to get cracking! ;)
