Canada Day with the Family

June 29, 2009

As a family we are all looking forward to celebrating Canada Day this year. My husband is looking forward to a day off work, to spend with his family. I am looking forward to have a co-pilot all day and the children are looking forward to everything. My preschooler is especially excited to wave the Canadian flag, sing "Oh Canada" and explore Halifax's celebrations. Of course the promise of fireworks is also very exciting for her. The weather is forecasting rain all week, but hopefully not on Canada Day or during the scheduled fireworks.

In order to make the celebrations extra special we are planning on doing a few things. First we are going to all wear red and white, in honour of the day. Then we are going to have a yummy pancake breakfast, since it just seems like that is what one does on Canada Day. We will be packing a lunch or dinner we have yet to decide. With small children an entire day of celebrating may be too overwhelming. Our intention is to head home in the afternoon to let our youngest take a nap and our preschooler to chill out a little.

Once we are back at the celebrating, we will have a picnic dinner then wander around the festivities. Being prepared for the weather and the temperatures cooling, it is a good idea to have sweaters or jackets along. The fireworks will be over the Halifax Harbour and I plan on investigating the best place to view them with children in tow. Then with some yummy hot chocolate in our thermas, we will settle in to watch the Canada Day fireworks with our children for the first time.

One the most amazing things about having children, is watching the world through their eyes. I am so excited to watch their faces and reactions to the fireworks.
