It is a Great Day to be Canadian

July 02, 2009

Despite our running noses and coughs, our family made it out to some of the many celebrations in Halifax yesterday. With small children in tow it is always difficult to decide what to attend and what not to. In such a large city as Halifax, the events are scattered throughout the HRM, making it that much harder to find our niche.

We went to the Commons, for a picnic and to take in the events set up there. It was very family orientated but very overwhelming and overcrowded. We waited an hour for a turn in the jumpy house, which was free. There was free flags and Canada Flag pins which the children enjoyed receiving. The weather was not sunny and gorgeous, but it did not rain and it was warm.

The kids really enjoyed the Discovery Centre's display. A huge inflated whale that they were able to walk through. They also had an inflated shark jaw that you could stand in for photos. We did not make it to the Lego display or the free face painting. The crowds were just too thick. It would have been nice if there was more variety so the crowds would be more dispersed.

Next year I would like to go to the Citadel instead. Or watch the Canada Day parade. There was much activity on the waterfront as well that would be interesting to explore. This year we really could only pick on place for a few hours since we were all sick. In fact, despite the great disappointment on the part of our preschooler, we did not attend the fireworks. Instead we hope to catch the fireworks during Bedford Days or Natal Day later this summer. We are bound not to be suffering with a cold by then.

We had great day celebrating Canada this year in Halifax and are looking forward to many more!
