Dinosaurs Dinosaurs Dinosaurs

July 09, 2009

Our preschooler has gone through many phases of a variety of interests. Typically she is interested in particular animals, nature and house pets. Dinosaurs are something she shows great interest in at times. It has been a year or so since she has shown great interest in dinosaurs, instead she had been focusing on cats, fairies and other whimsical creatures.

It is a Great Day to be Canadian

July 02, 2009

Despite our running noses and coughs, our family made it out to some of the many celebrations in Halifax yesterday. With small children in tow it is always difficult to decide what to attend and what not to. In such a large city as Halifax, the events are scattered throughout the HRM, making it that much harder to find our niche.

Explore George's Island this Weekend

June 11, 2009

When we first moved to Halifax and walked on the boardwalk on the waterfront, my eyes wandered to a tiny island. I had no idea that the little island was in fact, George's Island, named after King George II by the British. Later I came to learn that the island was not open to the public although it had quite a history!

Local Time

February 17, 2009

Looking for a cool place to talk about time with your preschooler? Why not check out the Halifax Citadel National Historic Site . Not only will you be transported back in time, you can share with your preschooler so many aspects that are based on time.

If you are there at 12 noon, you will get to witness the Noon Gun. A cannon is fired off, very cool.

The Town Clock, closed to the public is also on Citadel Hill. The clock, with four sides, was built in 1800 to prevent tardiness, and is used to set the noon gun, by which ships set their clocks for 200 years.

You really are transported in time, to the time period is 1869, when the 78th Highland Regiment was stationed at the Citadel. All the staff are in period costume and are doing activities that reflect those times. We went last year with my Grandmother and she was surprised to see young ladies using a wash tub and scrub, something she did as a young girl!

It looks like to get the full effect, families should wait until May to head down there. The Halifax Citadel is a major historic site and should be experienced!

July 1 to August 31- 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM

Lego Weekends

February 06, 2009

Ever wonder what the Halifax Harbour would look like if it was made out of Lego? This weekend is your last chance to catch it at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic. We went as a family last weekend to see it in person. Both the kids and the adults were flabbergasted! The Lego set up was amazing and inspirational. All this week we have been building cities, houses, and stores with our  Read more...

Current Events

January 20, 2009

As our preschoolers get older, sharing information about our local, national and world news becomes important. I am unwilling to share war, terror and absolute scary events, although the time will come that those events will need to be addressed as well. We do not watch the news, opting to read the news websites. Yet there are exciting events going on in the world that we can  Read more...

Another History Lesson - The Titanic

September 22, 2008

Halifax is rich in history and there is so much to share with your little one. Now most preschoolers will not be infatuated with Leonardo DiCaprio or Kate Winslet, yet, however Halifax plays a key role in the history of the famous ship. While one might want to skip the tour our city's cemeteries, where many of the Titanic victims are laid to rest, the history provides a great opportunity to talk  Read more...
