Tips to Prepare Kids for Bad Weather

August 20, 2009

Hurricane Bill is heading north towards Halifax this weekend. It is a fact of life living so close to the ocean that hurricanes may affect our lives. The Hurricane Juan impacted Halifax in the night from Sunday, September 28, 2003 to Monday, September 29, 2003. Over 300,000 homes were without electricity from 1 day to over a week. We did not live in the Maritimes at the time. However we get the impression people were not as prepared as they could have been for the devastating effects of the storm.

Midwifery in Halifax and Nova Scotia

August 06, 2009

When I got pregnant with my third child in Nova Scotia, I was unaware of the midwifery services that were available. In fact, the province was in the midst of regulating midwifery serves, in order to provide the services through our universal health care system. The first step was recognized in March 2009, when The Midwifery Act, passed in 2006 can into effect. As with any movement, the beginning is tough. This move to regulate midwifery services has made it difficult if not impossible for some midwives in Nova Scotia to continue practicing. Yet it must be applauded that the province, along side the midwives, are taking steps to provide this valuable service to all pregnant women in Nova Scotia.

The Volunteer Doula Program in Halifax

August 04, 2009

We had such an amazing experience giving birth to our third child at the IWK Health Centre this past weekend. My first two children for varying reasons were induced early. Although I attempted to avoid an epidural, the pain from the contractions brought on from the pitocin was too much for me to bear.

Time Well Spent

July 23, 2009

With the birth of our third child approaching (anytime now!) I find myself very reflective and thinking a lot about time spent with my children. The transition from having one child to having two, was not at all difficult at first. As a family we practice attachment parenting as our style of parenting. So when my son was born he became an extension of me, rather than an individual. This made the transition much easier for my almost three year old daughter to get used to fitting in the needs of another family member.

Canada Day Celebrations in Halifax

June 25, 2009

This is our first Canada Day celebrations in Halifax. Last year we were embarking on our first official family vacation, so we stopped in Fredericton to take in some Canada Day Festivities. Although the activities were fantastic and the kids had a fabulous time, I am really looking forward to attending the celebration in Halifax this year.

The 3D Miracles Experience

May 21, 2009

I was so disappointed to discover that gender identification and pictures were not shared with parents in the province of Nova Scotia. My two previous pregnancies were in different locations, both of which celebrated pregnancy, sharing as much information with parents and families as possible.

Tips for Children Coping with the Death of a Pet

May 05, 2009

By no means is this list exhaustive. Know that your child is hurting, in their own unique way. Allow them to feel, experience and live through their grief. The process for our child was long. Much longer than I anticipated. However, talking with other parents that have experienced pet loss, I found out that everything that she was experiencing was normal.

Tough Stuff - The Death of a Pet

May 04, 2009

When our preschooler was three years old our beloved cat, Charisma died. My daughter was devastated. For whatever reason, I guess we will never know for sure, moving that time was hard on Charisma. Was it the altitude change? The lack of furniture in the beginning? Too much change? His people were stressed and busy and did not see how little he was eating.

New Places to Explore

March 26, 2009

There are a few new businesses that I have heard about through the grapevine that I thought I would share with you. Preschool and children specific services are always nice to have in the area. In fact I was surprised when we moved to Halifax there was not more kid specific places. Well it looks like I just needed to be a little more patient! I have not had the opportunity to check out these businesses first hand yet, but they are definitely on the To Do list!

Record Keeping

January 15, 2009

Our children's lives pass before us so quickly. When our first was a newborn, premature, so tiny and I was so needed, I felt like time stood still. I wanted to reach that next milestone, that next pound gained, I wanted her to grow. Now that she is four and a half, I want time to stop, I want her to remain unchanging, I want to capture these days, hold them forever. Although I cannot  Read more...

Winter Birds

January 12, 2009

Our preschooler has been thoroughly enjoying all the snow we have. Everyday we head outside to dig, eat snow (her not me!) and sled down our little hill that is in our front yard. It has been wonderful to enjoy our yard in the winter. We have also had the opportunity to house four gorgeous Blue Jays in our apple tree. Both my preschooler and I are captivated and  Read more...
