Haircuts for Kids in Halifax

August 24, 2009

Some mothers fearlessly cut their child's hair. I am not one of them. I absolutely have to leave cutting hair to the professionals. I have attempted on a few occasions to trim my daughter's hair, or even bangs. It never turns out well. It is a combination of my nervousness and her anxiety that I am nervous that causes many uneven cuts. I even tried to cut my son's hair, thinking it would be easier since he is a boy. Nope. I must leave it to the professionals!

The End of Summer

August 13, 2009

Summertime started so slowly here in the Maritimes. The weather was dreadful, having experienced more rainy days than not. Yet we embraced that sense of magical freedom that only summer holds. Our family had a unique arrival this summer, which changed the activities slightly. We were not as adventurous as we usually are, instead we stayed close to home. Our own backyard became an oasis for our imaginations.

The Great Toy Stores in Halifax

June 23, 2009

My daughter's fifth birthday is quickly approaching. This year for both the children we decided to take a eco-friendly and budget friendly approach and look for gifts that were second hand. We lucked out and found a used trained table for our son a few months ago and for our daughter a child sized guitar and scooter. This was a very satisfying way to purchase their birthday gifts. Not only did we pay a fraction of the cost of the items new, we bought local saving the environment and our wallets the shipping costs.

Where to get the Goods, The Organics

March 09, 2009

We are so blessed in Halifax to be so close to a strong, healthy and many organic farms spread out all over Nova Scotia. I was excited to learn that Halifax has many options for those of us looking to feed our families well. While I lived in California, I learned of CSA's which stands for "Community Supported Agriculture," or, as some prefer to call it, "Community Sustaining Agriculture." I was eager to find out if Halifax had something similar. Buying local is something that I am very committed to, as well as fresh, safe foods for my family. Here are some of the options for Halifax parents.

Crab Night

February 20, 2009

Living on the east coast has many advantages. I loved the ocean when we were in California. The smell of the salt air, the sand, the water ... All very appealing especially to one that grew up on the prairies. As I gaze out my window to the harbour, I take a deep breath and taste the salt in the air. I am fully accepting of this being our home. It is new, a little intimidating at times and very far from family, but it is our city now.

(see he totally know J is going to cook him!)

Taking advantage of fresh seafood and farmer's markets we are starting to learn to cook the fresh foods of the Atlantic (mostly J since I am not really all that into dealing with our food if it is still alive).

We started off simple. Mussels. Mmmm, J steams then with a broth, garlic and basil ... My mouth is watering at the thought.

Then this past Saturday night we cooked up a couple crab ... J & B picked them out a the fish market and brought them home. I really really cannot touch a squirming nervous animal that totally knows it is about to die. Thankfully my adoring husband has overcome his phobias. The meal was so yummy and we hope to make it a Saturday tradition to make up a fabulous seafood meal, bought locally, prepared together as a family.
