Summer Movies with the Kids

July 06, 2009

My daughter and I went out for a special afternoon yesterday. It was the first time in a couple of years we went out to catch a movie at the theatre. When she was a tiny baby, there was a great Moms and Babies, matinee once a month. They would show adult comedies and romances at a reduced volume with the expectation that babies may cry. It was great! Then when she was three, and her brother just a newborn there was a summer matinee program that the theatre showed older movies for free, so we caught a few of those that summer.

However things got busy when we moved to Halifax. I have yet to come across discounted movies, but I haven't been looking either. Her little brother is too old to sleep through it, but to young to sit through it either. He is not much for sitting that long even at home, which is fine with me.

With the baby arriving in the next few weeks, a fifth birthday in a week and summer bordom at it peak (we so need some sunny weather!) it was a perfect opportunity to escape and watch a movie. There are a few really great children's movies out this summer, we chose to see Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs. My daugher loved the first two Ice Age movies and was tickled pink that there was dinosaurs in this movie (even though the ice age had no dinosaurs, something we talked about at length). The humour is on the edge of acceptable, however my daughter never catches the more adult like humour and really takes the movie at face value.

The movie Up from Disney has gotten rave reviews and we look forward to seeing it once it is out on DVD. Going to the theatre can be costly, however Empire Theatre has a Daily Deals of Summer promotion that may make it a little more affordable for the family to go. I would love to go see the new Harry Potter movie in the theatre however I just do not think I will be able to make that happen before the baby arrives!
